VA Secretary Shinseki Announces Local Grants for Homeless Veterans - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced today the award of $1,022, 292 in grant money to Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, Inc., one of 38 projects around the country that will provide temporary housing to formerly homeless Veterans with the goal that they will retain the residence as their own. Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center Tailors Plan to Expand Mental Health Staff - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki recently announced the department would add approximately 1,600 mental health clinicians as well as nearly 300 support staff to its existing workforce. VA estimates that 45 clinicians and 9 support personnel will be hired to support mental health operations at the Orlando VA Medical Center. Funding has now been distributed to the Orlando VAMC and recruitment is underway. (06/12/2012)

Florida Highway Patrol Major Cynthia Williams helps celebrate Police Week at the Orlando VAMC - In honor of National Police Week, the Orlando VA Medical Center will pay tribute to VA police officers and police officers everywhere with a special event on May 15 at 11 a.m. in the Medical Center Auditorium located at 5201 Raymond Street, Orlando, FL 32803. Funded by a national grant, the Tuesday classes will run in 6-week sessions. The next session begins October 11th with subsequent sessions running through June 2012. Registration is required and classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. (09/27/2011)

Orlando VA Medical Center hosts "Stand Down" for homeless Veterans - On Saturday, September 24th, the Orlando VA Medical Center is working with several community partners to host a one-day event to provide medical services, community resources and hospitality directly to Veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness in Orange County. The event is being held at the Downtown Orlando Recreation Center, 649 West Livingston Street, Orlando, Fla. 32801 and is scheduled from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Services will include medical care, showers, meals, shelter information, mental health services and counseling. The Department of Motor Vehicles will assist Veterans in applying for IDs and driver’s licenses. Lynx Transportation is offering free transportation to participants. This Stand Down furthers the mission of the Orlando VA Medical Center’s Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program to end homelessness among Veterans through outreach efforts and community partnerships. Combat Veterans invited to a grand opening at the Daytona Beach Vet Center - All combat Veterans are invited to attend a Grand Opening at the Daytona Beach Vet Center at 11 a.m. on Sept. 16 at 1620 Mason Avenue, Suite C, Daytona Beach, FL 32117. Veterans can meet the center's staff and learn about the Vet Center program. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling and outreach services to all veterans who served in any combat zone. Services are also available for their family members for military related issues. Veterans have earned these benefits through their service and all are provided at no cost to the Veteran or family. By the end of 2011, the Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Center program will have 300 community-based counseling centers in operation. The Vet Centers are staffed by small multi-disciplinary teams of dedicated providers, many of which are combat Veterans themselves. (09/13/2011)

New Program enhances VA services for Family Caregivers - On Tuesday, staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) published the interim final rule for implementing the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act 2010. This new rule will provide additional support to eligible post-9/11 Veterans who elect to receive their care in a home setting from a primary Family Caregiver. (05/05/2011)

Smith's idea was to allow VA Eligibility offices and Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) social workers to electronically access data from Military Personnel Records Centers to obtain DD Form 214s. OVAMC staff teaches basic life support skills to the University of Central Florida Med students - The Orlando VA Medical Center hosted the charter class of 41 University of Central Florida Medical students on Aug. 7. Physicians and staff from the medical center taught the Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Course to the students. The course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an automated external defibrillator, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.
